In total, three scientific and practical conferences and 30 round tables were held as part of the eSports festival. The events were attended by more than 1,000 scientists, industry experts, government officials, athletes and esports players, as well as more than 15,000 online participants. More than 4,000 thousand students from hundreds of Russian and foreign universities took part in the qualifying tournaments,” the event organizers report.
During the grand opening, the finalists, in-person and online fans were addressed by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Olga Petrova, head of the educational projects service, head of the RT School Anna Kovtunova, Russian chess player, grandmaster, Guinness Book of Records record holder Sergey Karyakin.
In her welcoming speech, Olga Petrova spoke about the close connection between science and e-sports, as well as the activities that the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation is taking to develop e-sports in Russia.
Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov warmly supports e-sports and the second season of the Battle for Science. This year we held a series of scientific and practical seminars where we looked at e-sports from a scientific point of view. Much has appeared for popularization, for strengthening, for the rapid development of various winning strategies. E-sports is a sport that is actively gaining momentum and doing so very intensively - in particular, Vladimir Putin emphasized that it is necessary to be actively involved in this direction. There will soon be “games of the future” in Kazan, the Ministry of Education and Science, within the framework of the 10th anniversary of science and technology, which were announced by our president, and within the framework of the strategy of scientific and technological development, is developing this area and many other scientific and applied areas that allow combining scientific knowledge and sports and attract more and more students. Congratulations to those who will compete in the finals today, believe in your strength! Strength is in the team!” said Olga Petrova.
In turn, the head of the RT School, Anna Kovtunova, confirmed the high popularity of e-sports among young people.
Esports is trending now, but there are still a huge number of people who don’t understand what it is. Therefore, the popularization of e-sports, as well as science and technology in general, is one of the main tasks, primarily for journalists and student media,” says Kovtunova.
As part of the «Battle for Science», another competition was held, its participants were student media that prepared content about e-sports. Anna Kovtunova presented a certificate for 100,000 rubles to the winner, who became the student media center «Polymer» from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.
Also during the event, the Guinness Book of Records record holder, Russian grandmaster Sergei Karyakin held exhibition games. The chess player’s show match took place in a blitz format with the winner of the qualifying stages, a student of Sakhalin State University, Oleg Mitrokhin. As a result, the show-mate was completed with Karjakin's victory.
Chess and eSports are somewhat close, especially when it comes to strategy games, when you don’t just need to shoot, but build a strategy. I believe that chess is also close to e-sports in terms of the fact that you need to spend a lot of time on training. I myself enjoy playing computer games,” said Karjakin.
In addition to the final computer battles, all visitors to the event were treated to interactive dance and retrogaming zones, virtual reality zones, fashion shows of cosplay models and much more. Participants in the cyber tournament competed in eight disciplines: League of Legends, VALORANT, StandOff 2, PUBG, Caliber, Blitz Tanks, DOTA 2, World of Tanks. During the Grand Final, competitions took place on the main stage of the tournament among the two most popular disciplines - DOTA 2 and World of Tanks.

RANEPA Conference on 26.10.2023
The scientific and practical conference «Marketing and Business» as part of the e-sports festival «Battle for Science – 2023» was held at RANEPAOn October 26, a scientific and practical conference «Marketing and Business» was held at the Presidential Academy of RANEPA, organized as part of the international festival of student e-sports and the science of computer sports «Battle for Science – 2023». More than 20 experts from various industries took part in the event; 15 thousand spectators participated as online and offline listeners.
The key speakers of the plenary session were Director of the Department of Information and Press of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova, Director of the Department of Information Policy and Integrated Security of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Andrei Tolmachev, President of the Serbian Esports Federation Dalibor Marinovich (Serbia). In addition, representatives of scientific and research teams, marketing agencies, sports associations and others participated in the scientific and practical conference.
The successes of Russian cybersportsmen were noted by the Director of the Department of Information and Press of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.
“In a short time, our country has developed one of the best e-sports schools in the world. The success of our players in the so-called International, it seems to me, forced the whole world to talk about the phenomenon of Russian eSports; moreover, a whole spectrum, a whole market of services in this area has appeared. It is no coincidence that next year the first international “Games of the Future” will be held in Kazan. This is a unique, flagship project that will bring together teams from different countries, from different continents,” said Zakharova.
Maria Zakharova also spoke in general about the politicization of global sports in the context of the Olympic Games.
“You know very well that the exclusion of Russian athletes and, in principle, Russian sports from world sports (at least an attempt), it did not begin in 2022, it’s just that before that all this was found various pretexts, which one way or another they tried to pass off as objective . <…> I am absolutely sure that the main goal is simply the collapse of the world Olympic movement, that is, there should be world sport from the point of view of Western thought, but it should not be under the auspices of Olympism. It is important. Because Olympism is, like the UN Charter: equality, equal conditions, written laws, a clear understanding of the system and refereeing, arbitration, non-interference of political ideologies in sports life. All this is not necessary. We need a new, from the point of view of the West, world sport, which would be based exclusively and only on the decision of one group of countries, and at its head would be generally one or two countries, which every year would not just change and rewrite the rules, but in principle would act outside the rules,” she believes.
Director of the Department of Information Policy and Integrated Security of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science Andrey Tolmachev addressed the conference participants.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, I am pleased to welcome the participants of the scientific and practical conference. The Ministry pays increased attention to the support and development of e-sports in Russia <...> and it’s great that this is not just a series of tournaments in various e-sports disciplines, but also a series of scientific and practical conferences, because without science, without the help of the scientific block, the development of e-sports is impossible”- said Tolmachev.
The President of the Serbian Esports Federation, Dalibor Marinovich, spoke about his good impressions from visiting the «Games of the Future» tournament, held in Kazan in the physical format, and also noted the high level of interest in the new sport in Russia in general.
“Obviously, Russia recognizes the importance of such a large (esports) community and we in Serbia think that this is great content, we will support the development. We love the combination of sports and esports. Once upon a time it was just entertainment, but now it is a phenomenon, one might say a market with a large number of people involved directly or indirectly in the industry. From a marketing and business point of view, there are entire groups of products and services: more than 2 billion people are involved in the industry: someone plays, someone creates games, produces equipment, there is a large community, thanks to the Internet, global communication,” says Dalibor Marinovich.
RANEPA Vice-Rector Andrei Margolin also noted the importance of the connection between eSports, science, and government and business, which were the key topics of the scientific and practical conference.
“It seems to me that the fact that science comes to e-sports is also very important, because without science we cannot promote any sport. <…>. Regarding the topic “Marketing and Business”, it is extremely important. A huge number of people, watching what is happening, talk about the increasing role of the state. Objectively, this is necessary, but it is not forever. We should probably think in terms of an inverted parabola. Yes, now, naturally, the state is increasing its role in the economy, but it must take advantage of this period of time to create the prerequisites for business for further development and its widespread involvement in everything that is happening,” he said.
In addition, during the conference, Denis Vodov, director of the Center for Innovative Competencies in Physical Education and Student Sports at the Russian State University named after A. N. Kosygin, announced his intention to introduce labeling for computer games that violate historical truth.
“Now we are increasingly seeing that the gaming industry is being used by individual countries as a political tool. Previously, this was reflected in some computer games about the Great Patriotic War, where the role of the Soviet people was artificially belittled. Now we are seeing this more and more often, this applies to a wide variety of computer games, where the merits of the USSR or Russia are deliberately distorted and presented in a caricature or negative context. Therefore, we will take the initiative to label games that violate historical truth,” Vodov said.
The conference was divided into three sections: «Economics of the e-sports and gaming market in Russia», «E-sports as an effective marketing tool in Russia and abroad», «The role of innovation in promoting sustainable development». During the work of the sections, issues of supporting domestic e-sports, its impact on youth and society as a whole, and the contribution of e-sports to the development of technology and sociological research were discussed.
The event concluded with an exhibition tournament in Counter-Strike 2, in which RANEPA students and a team of faculty members from Moscow universities competed.

Many experts talk about sport as an important element of «soft power». A.O. Naumov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, writes in her work «Sports diplomacy as a tool of «soft power»: «... any power that claims global or regional status in world politics today is simply obliged to have an extensive toolkit of «soft power», an integral part of which, of course, is sports diplomacy. Like «soft power», sport can be used to establish good neighborly relations between states, act as a catalyst for the mutual enrichment of cultures, intensify cultural and humanitarian exchanges, and even contribute to the resolution of critical diplomatic issues».
This is exactly what the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation S.V. Lavrov is talking about: «Significantly more resources need to be allocated to soft power than is currently being done». In confirmation of this, from January 1, 2022, a new department for international cooperation in the field of culture, science, education and sports appeared in the structure of the central apparatus of the Russian Foreign Ministry, which «will be engaged in developing a strategy and coordinating Russia’s actions in the field of so-called soft power».
